Prizes, the fleet and big groups

Line honours goes to the first yacht into Hobart. Overall is the handicap winner (the Tattersall Cup), which can be any size of boat.

Only a handful of 100-foot maxis can realistically take line honours. This makes sure one person can't end up with two of them.

Every yacht is dealt out at random with your browser's secure random number generator. Nothing is sent to us.

Built for the Great Race South

How To Run a Sydney to Hobart Sweep

  1. 1

    Agree the prizes

Set the entry price and decide what wins. Most groups split the pool between line honours and the overall winner, with a small prize for last to finish.

  2. 2

    Add names and deal

One line per ticket. Press Deal the yachts and every boat in the fleet is handed out, with the maxis spread across different people.

  3. 3

    Do the reveal

Put the big-screen reveal on the TV before lunch on Boxing Day and watch everyone's fleet arrive.

  4. 4

    Watch the race

The fleet leaves Sydney Harbour at 1pm. As boats retire, they drop off everyone's card, so you can see who still has a chance.

  5. 5

    Pay out as results land

Line honours comes first, usually within two days. The overall winner follows once the smaller boats finish. Your sweep shows who gets paid what.

The Prizes in a Hobart Sweep

Unlike a horse race, the Sydney Hobart has two winners that matter, and they are rarely the same boat.

Line honours

The first yacht across the finish line in Hobart wins the Illingworth Challenge Cup. Realistically one of the 100-foot maxis.

Overall winner

The Tattersall Cup goes to the best corrected time on handicap. Big or small, any boat in the IRC fleet can win it.

Double handed winner

The best of the 18 yachts sailed by just two people. A good extra prize for bigger sweeps.

Last to finish

A consolation prize for whoever holds the final boat into Hobart. Retired yachts don't count.

The 2026 Sydney to Hobart Fleet

106 yachts are on the official entry list (as at 30 October 2026), including 18 double handed entries. Line honours should be a fight between the 100-footers: LawConnect, Palm Beach XI, Tribeca LOYAL, Wild Thing 100. The full fleet is loaded into the sweep generator above.

How Saving and Sharing Work

It saves as you go

Everything you type, deal and tick is saved in your browser automatically. There is no account and nothing to press.

Coming back later

Open this page again on the same phone or computer and your sweep is waiting. Running a few? They are all under "Your saved sweeps".

Share links are copies

A share link holds the sweep exactly as it is when you copy it. Whoever opens it gets their own copy, saved on their device.

Results fill in for everyone

Payments you tick don't sync, so send a new link after big changes. Official retirements and results fill in on every copy by themselves.

Different phone or computer?

Copy the share link and open it on the other device. That copies your sweep across.

Keep a backup

Private or incognito windows and clearing your browser history delete saved sweeps. A share link in your email or group chat is your backup.

Sydney to Hobart Sweep FAQs

How does a Sydney to Hobart sweep work?
Everyone pays the same entry, then every yacht in the fleet is dealt out at random so each person ends up with a handful of boats. Prizes go to whoever holds the line honours winner (first into Hobart), the overall winner on handicap, and any other prizes your group agrees on, like last to finish. With 106 yachts and 15 people, everyone gets about seven.
What is the difference between line honours and the overall winner?
Line honours goes to the first yacht to cross the finish line in Hobart, which is almost always one of the 100-foot maxis. The overall winner takes the Tattersall Cup, decided on handicap (corrected time), so a small, well-sailed boat can beat the giants. That makes the overall prize anyone's to win in a sweep.
Is it fair if one person gets a maxi?
Only a few yachts can realistically take line honours, so the generator spreads the line honours contenders (LawConnect, Palm Beach XI, Tribeca LOYAL, Wild Thing 100) across different people by default. Nobody can end up with two of them, and everyone still gets the same number of boats give or take one.
When are the winners decided?
The 100-footers usually reach Hobart in under two days, so line honours is normally settled by 27 or 28 December. The overall winner can't be confirmed until the smaller boats finish, which can take several more days. Your sweep shows each prize as soon as it is decided.
What happens if a yacht retires?
Retirements are part of the race, and no refunds are given for them. Mark the yacht as retired (or let the official retirements fill in) and each person's card shows how many of their boats are still racing. For yachts that pull out before the start, choose all-in (no refunds) or refund anyone left with no yacht at all.
Can I close the page and come back later?
Yes. Your sweep saves automatically in your browser as you go. Open this page again on the same phone or computer and it will be right where you left it, even days later when the results come in. If you run more than one sweep, they are all listed under Your saved sweeps.
How do share links work?
Press Copy share link and send it to the group. The link holds a copy of the whole sweep as it is at that moment, and anyone who opens it gets their own copy saved on their device. If you tick off payments afterwards, send a fresh link. Official retirements and results are different, because they fill in on everyone's copy automatically.
Can I show the draw on a big screen?
Yes. Press Big-screen reveal, put it full screen on the TV and press start. Each person's yachts drop in one at a time, with a fanfare when someone lands a maxi. Presenter board shows everyone's fleet at once, with how many boats each person still has racing.
Are office sweeps legal in Australia?
Small private sweeps are a summer tradition, but the rules sit with each state and territory. Keep it simple: small entry amounts, every cent paid back out as prizes, no cut for the organiser and no one under 18. Check with your state's gaming regulator before running a big sweep or a fundraiser.

Beyond the Boxing Day Sweep

A sweep is pure luck, and that's half the fun. The summer of sport around it is also when Australian bookmakers push hard for new customers, with sign-up bonuses and promotions on the cricket, the tennis and the racing.

I use those promotions to make a low-risk profit by backing at the bookmaker and laying the same bet on Betfair. It's called matched betting, and matched betting for beginners explains how it works. Running a horse race sweep too? Our Melbourne Cup sweep generator works the same way.

Keep it fun. If gambling stops being fun for you or someone you know, free and confidential support is available 24/7 from Gambling Help Online or on 1800 858 858.

Turn Summer Promotions Into Profit

Our free 3-part matched betting course shows you how to turn bookmaker promotions into low-risk profit. Most people make their first profit within an hour.
