Field, prizes, scratchings and big groups

Agree this before the draw. Both refunds and all-in are acceptable in Victoria as long as everyone knows the rule.

An unsold horse that places has its prize split between everyone.

Separate sweeps each get the full field and their own prize pool.

The Melbourne Cup field is capped at 24.

You can add or fix names after the draw. Everyone keeps their number. Add odds after a name with a $ sign if you want them shown (optional).

For fun only. Every horse pays the same in a sweep, but it's nice to know if you drew the favourite or a roughie.

Every draw uses your browser's secure random number generator. Nothing is sent to us.

Everything a Cup Sweep Organiser Needs

The real field

Load the official 2026 field with barriers and jockeys in one click once it is declared, or draw by number before then.

Scratchings sorted

Pick refund, all-in or redraw before the draw. Tick a scratched horse and every prize is recalculated.

Any size group

Fewer than 24 people, or 80 of them. Share horses or run Sweep A and Sweep B side by side.

Who's paid

Tick people off as they hand over their money and see exactly how much is still to collect.

A big-screen reveal

Put the draw on the meeting room TV. Horses come out one by one and a name wheel spins and lands on the owner.

Who drew the favourite

Indicative odds next to every horse once the field is out, so everyone knows if they got a chance or a roughie.

Come back any time

Your sweep saves on your device as you go. Close the page and pick it up again on race day.

Print and share

A4 master sheet with a QR code, cut-out tickets, a group chat message and a link that opens the same sweep.

How To Run a Melbourne Cup Sweep

  1. 1

    Agree the rules first

Set the entry price ($2, $5 and $10 are the usual tickets), the prize split and what happens to a scratched horse. Everyone should know all three before the draw.

  2. 2

    Add names and draw

One line per ticket. If someone buys two tickets, put their name in twice. Press Draw the horses, then put the big-screen reveal up on the TV and press start.

  3. 3

    Collect the money

Tick people off in Who's paid as the cash comes in. The tool shows how much is still owed.

  4. 4

    Share the draw

Use Copy for group chat for Teams, Slack or WhatsApp, Copy share link to send the live sweep, or Print sheet and tickets for the tearoom wall.

  5. 5

    Race morning and race time

Scratchings close on race morning. We add official scratchings and the result to this page, and your sweep applies them and shows exactly who gets paid what.

How Saving and Sharing Work

It saves as you go

Everything you type, draw and tick is saved in your browser automatically. There is no account and nothing to press.

Coming back later

Open this page again on the same phone or computer and your sweep is waiting. Running a few? They are all under "Your saved sweeps".

Share links are copies

A share link holds the sweep exactly as it is when you copy it. Whoever opens it gets their own copy, saved on their device.

Changes don't sync

Tick off payments or scratchings after sending the link? Send a new one. The official race result is the exception: it fills in on every copy by itself.

Different phone or computer?

Copy the share link and open it on the other device. That copies your sweep across.

Keep a backup

Private or incognito windows and clearing your browser history delete saved sweeps. A share link in your email or group chat is your backup.

How To Split the Prize Pool

There's no official rule, so agree the split before the draw. Here's what each common split pays in a full 24-person sweep at $5 a ticket ($120 pool).

60 / 25 / 10 / 5

The office favourite. Last place gets a little back.

  • 1st $72
  • 2nd $30
  • 3rd $12
  • Last $6

70 / 20 / 10

Bigger first prize, no consolation for last.

  • 1st $84
  • 2nd $24
  • 3rd $12

50 / 30 / 20

Flatter split. More people walk away with something decent.

  • 1st $60
  • 2nd $36
  • 3rd $24

Winner takes all

Simple, and best for small sweeps of under ten people.

  • 1st $120

Melbourne Cup Sweep Rules in Victoria

The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) treats a Cup sweep as a lottery and sets out a few simple rules:

  • Every dollar collected goes back out as prizes. The organiser keeps nothing for costs.
  • Total prizes in a sweep can't be more than $5,000. The generator warns you if a pool goes over.
  • There's no minimum or maximum entry price, and you choose which places win.
  • Decide before the draw whether a scratched horse means a refund or is all-in, and tell everyone.

Other states and territories have their own rules, so check with your local regulator before running a big sweep or a fundraiser.

Melbourne Cup Sweep FAQs

What happens if my horse is scratched?
Your group picks the rule before the draw. Refund gives the entry back and shrinks the prize pool. All-in means no refund and the pool stays the same. Redraw hands the owner a spare horse if there is one, and refunds them if there isn't. Tick the scratched horse and the tool applies your rule and recalculates every prize.
What if fewer than 24 people are in the sweep?
Choose hand out the extras and the leftover horses go to random people (nobody gets a third horse until everyone has two). Choose leave them unsold and each ticket gets one horse. If an unsold horse places, that prize is split evenly between everyone in the sweep.
What if more than 24 people want in?
You have two options. Share horses puts two (or more) people on some horses and splits any prize between them. Separate sweeps splits the group into Sweep A, Sweep B and so on, each with the full field and its own prize pool. The tool handles up to 200 entries.
When is the final Melbourne Cup field announced?
The final field of up to 24 runners is declared on the Saturday before the Cup (Victoria Derby Day), followed by the barrier draw. Once it is confirmed we load it into this page, so you can fill your sweep with the real horses in one click. If you draw by number before then, everyone keeps their saddlecloth number when the names go in.
Do the results update automatically?
After the race we add the official placings and any race-morning scratchings to this page. Open your sweep (or the share link) and they are applied for you, with the payouts worked out. You can still change them by hand if your group agreed on something different.
Is the draw random?
Yes. The tool shuffles the horses using your browser's cryptographic random number generator (the same one used for security keys), so every ticket has an equal chance at every horse. The draw happens on your device and nothing is sent to Oz Profit.
Can I close the page and come back later?
Yes. Your sweep saves automatically in your browser as you go. Open this page again on the same phone or computer and it will be right where you left it. If you run more than one sweep, they are all listed under Your saved sweeps. Private or incognito windows and clearing your browser history will wipe it, so keep a share link as a backup.
Can everyone see the sweep?
Press Copy share link and send it to the group. The link holds a copy of the whole sweep as it is at that moment, so anyone who opens it sees the same draw. It is a snapshot: if you tick off payments or scratchings afterwards, send a fresh link. The official result is different, because that fills in on everyone's copy automatically.
What happens when I open a share link someone sent me?
You get your own copy of their sweep, saved on your device, so you can come back to it later without the link. Changes you make only affect your copy, and theirs won't change yours. Any other sweeps you had saved stay put. If they send you a newer link, open it to update your copy.
Can I show the draw on a big screen?
Yes. Press Big-screen reveal, put it full screen on the meeting room TV and press start. Horses come out one at a time in random order, with a spinning name wheel that slows down and lands on the owner. Choose slow, normal or fast, turn the sound on, pause, or press space to skip ahead. Presenter board shows the whole draw at once for race time.
Can I see the odds for each horse?
Once the field is declared we add indicative odds next to each horse, and you can type your own after a horse name (like "Half Yours $6.50"). They are just for fun and to see who drew the favourite. Every horse pays the same prize in a sweep, and you can switch the odds off in the settings.
Are office sweeps legal in Australia?
In Victoria, the gambling regulator (VGCCC) treats a Melbourne Cup sweep as a lottery: all the money collected must be returned as prizes, the organiser can't keep any for costs, and total prizes can't exceed $5,000. Agree the prize list and the scratching rule before the draw. Other states and territories set their own rules, so check your local regulator if you're running a large or fundraising sweep elsewhere.
What about a dead heat?
If two horses dead heat for a place, the fair rule is to add the two prizes together and split them evenly. For a dead heat for 1st, add the 1st and 2nd prizes together and halve it. Set one horse in each place and adjust that payout by hand.

Beyond the Office Sweep

A sweep is pure luck. Cup week is also when Australian bookmakers run their biggest racing promotions of the year: bonus bets back if your horse runs second or third, odds boosts and refund specials on every race at Flemington.

I use those promotions to lock in a profit whichever horse wins, by backing a horse at the bookmaker and laying the same horse on Betfair. It's called matched betting, and my horse racing matched betting guide shows how it works on race day. If you're new to it, start with matched betting for beginners.

Keep the Cup fun. If gambling stops being fun for you or someone you know, free and confidential support is available 24/7 from Gambling Help Online or on 1800 858 858.
